Hair Coloring FAQ

How long does a balayage appointment take?

A full balayage appointment at Plush Salon in Oakdale, PA typically takes 2 to 3 hours, depending on your hair length, thickness, and the level of lift needed. Clients with very long or thick hair, or those going from a darker base to a lighter result, may need closer to 3.5 hours for the best outcome. Your appointment includes a consultation, the hand-painting process, processing time, a toner application, and a finishing blowout. Your stylist will give you an accurate time estimate during your initial consultation. We recommend arriving with clean, product-free hair for the best color absorption.

What is the difference between balayage and highlights?

Balayage is a hand-painted coloring technique that creates a soft, natural grow-out with no visible line of demarcation. Traditional foil highlights use foils to lift sections of hair for more uniform brightness from root to tip. Balayage tends to require less frequent maintenance because the transition from your natural root color is gradual, while foil highlights typically need a touch-up every 6 to 8 weeks. Many Plush Salon clients combine both techniques for maximum dimension and depth. During your consultation, your colorist will assess your hair texture, natural base color, and style goals to recommend the best approach.

How often should I touch up my color?

The frequency of color touch-ups depends on the type of service. Root touch-ups for single-process color are typically needed every 4 to 6 weeks to cover new growth. Balayage and hand-painted highlights can go 8 to 12 weeks between appointments because the grow-out is softer and more blended. If you have grey coverage needs, your colorist may recommend a 4-week schedule to keep roots looking fresh. We also offer Olaplex and deep conditioning treatments between color appointments to keep your hair healthy and vibrant.

Will coloring damage my hair?

Professional hair coloring at Plush Salon is designed to minimize damage while delivering beautiful results. Our colorists use professional-grade products from L’Oreal, Keune, and Goldwell that are formulated to protect hair integrity during the coloring process. We also offer Olaplex bond-building treatments as an add-on during any color service, which repairs and strengthens the internal bonds of your hair while color is processing. Your stylist will evaluate your hair condition before every appointment and adjust the formula and timing to avoid over-processing.

Do I need a consultation before my first color appointment?

We highly recommend a consultation for first-time color clients at Plush Salon. Consultations are complimentary and take about 15 to 20 minutes. During the consultation, your colorist will evaluate your current hair condition, discuss your color goals, review your hair history including any previous chemical treatments, and recommend the best approach. This is especially important for clients who have previously colored their hair at home or at another salon, as layered color history can affect the outcome. Schedule your free consultation by calling (412) 275-3442.

Can I color my hair if I have extensions?

Yes, you can color your hair while wearing extensions, but it requires a stylist who understands both services. At Plush Salon, our stylist Tiffani specializes in both extensions and color and knows how to place balayage and highlights to complement extension work without causing damage to the bonds or tape. The key is avoiding direct contact between the color formula and the extension attachment points. If you are considering both color and extensions, we recommend scheduling a consultation so your stylist can plan the best order of services.
